As well as clinical services covering all aspects of colorectal disease and intestinal failure, it has many research interests and a very active programme of teaching and education.
St. Mark's prides itself on a multidisciplinary approach to individual patients and combines both medical and surgical expertise with specialist nursing and paramedical skills.
St. Mark's Hospital along with the Hope Hospital, Manchester, are nationally headed to provide the Intestinal Failure Service. The Intestinal Failure Service is commissioned from St. Mark's by the National Commissioning Group for Highly Specialised Services.
Angie Davidson, Nurse Consultant at St Marks has used the a Nursing service for many years and says —
“For many years now St Marks have been discharging patients to home on parenteral nutrition (PN) with the aim of ensuring the techniques and standards used at St Marks transfer with the patient into the home setting. The intent of training and educating the patient is to take them from a passive dependence on nursing care in the hospital setting to independence and self care at home. In the majority of cases this is achieved, however, occasionally the clinical condition of the patients prevents self care, and so the service of a reliable and skilled nursing service has to be sought to allow the patient to return home safely and have their therapy administered to them.
I have used the Calea nursing service for over 10 years for many of our patients both for full nursing care and also for training our patients once they are at home. Their professionalism and knowledge has been outstanding and their consistency and capacity to supply nursing care, sometimes at short notice is invaluable to expedite discharge.
Their Nurse Manager ensures that the nursing team are trained on our procedures and protocols and attend training days to maintain their practical skills and update knowledge. The ability to use a caring and responsible service that is enthusiastic and reliable is invaluable. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Calea nursing team and look forward to continuing our nursing partnership in the future.”
