Welsh HPN Network In partnership with Calea Nursing Service

There are two centrally funded intestinal failure units in the UK. These are at St Marks Hospital, London and Hope hospital Salford. They are funded by the Department of Health to provide treatment for Intestinal failure. As a consequence they have built up expertise in Home Parenteral Nutrition.

The presence of strong devolved government in Wales led to support for HPN as a specialised service regionally. A Welsh Adult HPN Network with centres in Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham agreed to share standards of care and protocols to provide training and support for home parenteral nutrition. Funded by Health Commission Wales, the homecare service is provided across Wales by Calea UK.

Winnie Magambo, nutrition nurse for Welsh HPN works closely with the Calea Nursing Service to safely discharge HPN patients into the community. This overview demonstrates the fulfillment of her and her patients' expectations.

Winnie Magambo, Nutrition Nurse for the Welsh HPN network explains the benefits of this specialist service.

“The Calea HPN nursing support service has been and continues to be an invaluable asset to the Welsh PN network, more so as it continues to expand with patients requiring diverse nursing support at home. Reports from the patients within the network commend the Calea nurses on their professionalism and friendly manner when they visit their homes. Patients have also commented on the reliability of the nurses attending to their needs, enabling them to maintain a lifestyle that suits their social needs and limiting or restricting them in any way.

The Welsh HPN has benefited from:

  • Nursing input in clinics for those receiving regular homecare nursing support. This has aided the MDT decision making for the treatment plan of the patient by providing relevant and important clinical information pertaining to the patients home environment.
  • Early medical intervention of patients who become unwell at home and where the Calea homecare nurse has reported concerns to the relevant centre.
  • Input from the Calea nurses in the Parenteral Study Days, and all support nurses being trained to the Welsh HPN procedures and protocols. This has ensured consistency and uniformity in the hands on practice both in the home and hospital setting.
  • Availability of Calea nurses to continue training the patients in their home environment in cases where more time has been required to train patients to self care for their HPN.

We have had no complaints with regard to the competency or professionalism of any of the Calea HPN support nurses within the WHPN network and hope that they will continue to provide an excellent service.”
